Version 4.0, which have been uploaded last week, still contained a dialog in

file 4.0 to  Archivist 4.1 infos. This last file is already in the directory.

The Archivist is in continuous development so you can expect new versions in

replacement for BMAPEdit 1.2, currently located in the game/bolo directory.

Gatekeeper 1.2.8 is a set of Macintosh system extensions (INITs)
and related control panels (cdevs) which, when active (i.e.
allowed to install themselves during the boot process) offer
protection against attacks by all known viruses (to the author
at the time of this release).

Gatekeeper also monitors computer activities for what are
considered to be suspicious 'events' or 'operations', in an
attempt to intercept what could be variants of known viruses or
even completely new viruses.

Since its initial release in January of 1989, Gatekeeper has
repeatedly demonstrated some ability to stop the spread of
viruses which were unknown during its design. Like any anti-
virus system, however, it cannot guarantee complete protection.

Of course, no claims or promises are made regarding Gatekeeper's
effectiveness or suitability, and some functions and capabil-
ities of Gatekeeper are non-trivial to use and may require a
careful reading of the documentation.

This latest version of Gatekeeper, 1.2.8, is a maintenance
release, and does not deal with any new viruses.

SciCalc is a simple implementation of a standard (i.e. NOT Reverse Polish or
'RPN') scientific calculator for the Apple Newton MessagePad and similar
PDAs.
This is the first release version, which has so far only been tested by the
developer.  If you do find problems, please let me know so that I can rectify
them in the next release.

To load it into a Newton MessagePad, you must have a Mac (on which you should
be
reading this!) and the beta Connection Kit.  Simply connect your Mac to your
Newton, and install the Calc.pkg file as a Newton application, down the
connection to your Newton.

Current features:
All floating point numeric calculations normally found on a basic 'scientific'
calculator, including a wide range of trig and exp/log functions.
A single number display, edited by button use only.
Two standard financial functions.
Two user-accessible memorys, which include summation functions.
Constants Pi and e available from keys.
Conversion to and from radians and degrees.

Planned features:
Hexadecimal math (possibly even with hexadecimal point!).
Copying of result to other Newton apps.
My own error/exception trapping.

Contrary to the documentation, the new upload of the Star Trek
game, Rescue 1.5 does not seem to work on BW macs.  I got the
same unimplemented trap error on my PB100 and accelerated SE.
The older version (1.0) worked fine on both machines.  I would
notify the author, but he doesn't include an electronic address.

If you have a non-color mac, wait for a newer version of Rescue.
It is well worth the download, when it works.

Here comes the first final release of Speecher. The first Speech manager
application that is slightly more than a toy.

It is a small program that will speak text you enter (or paste from another
program). It will let you covert to phonemes, and modify these too. It also
allows you to change the speed, base pitch, and pitch modulation.

Documentation (including a description of the phonemes) is included.

IMPORTANT: This application requires the Apple Speech Manager to run, and
it runs even better with the Sound Manager 3.0 installed.

It turns out that the solution for us is to use our existing
GatorBox, and let the GatorBox route to the printer.  I can't
tell if it's slower.  We won't be re-wiring, so if the GatorBox

I get a call from our secretary -- "my mac is not working what do I do?"

I check it out - the old (6 years) Mirror Technologies 40 meg external hard
drive is dead - it won't spin up (don't get me wrong, this unit worked
perfectly every day for 6 years).  "Sorry, I say, looks like your hard disk
is just plain worn out."  She turns ashen - "But I haven't backed up for a
month, what am I going to do!"  I say - "Let me look at it" (visions of a
door stop crosses my mind).

With my limited technological abilities, I "look" at the drive - I change
the cable - no help - I try a different mac - no - I get the rubber hammer
and give it a rap - still nothing.  Finally I remember somewhere the talk
of stiction - maybe the lubrication in the bearings is just dried out.
Lets see, maybe some anti-gravity would work.  So, I turn the complete unit
upside down (metal case and all - the thing must weigh 10 pounds) - turned
it on - it works - it spins up (or is it down)!  I quickly back up to
floppies and inform the secretary that I saved her data and if she doesn't
mind here mac sitting on the underside of the hard disk, she will be ok for
a few days until we receive a replacement drive.

She is very happy, I'm a hero.

Moral of the story: It ain't over till its turned over.

To which I say:

No way!  I have System 7.1 running on my PowerBook 170 and BeHierarchic 1.0.5
runs fine!  And I have a number of other extensions/cdevs running, including
Speedy Finder, AutoDoubler, Super Boomerang, SuperClock, After Dark, Timbuktu,
and QuickMail (QuickInit). Investigate some other init conflict.

I'll check out the newer version of BeHierarchic, but I can verify that the
version you ask about works fine under System 7.1.

I like BBEdit Lite, but you must be forewarned: it doesn't wrap text
automatically. I find it incredibly annoying to watch my text continue
linearly to the right. Periodically I can manually invoke the wrap
function, but this is hardly convenient. The full version of BBEdit (2.5)
does have an automatic wrap function, but I don't think it's worth the $49
upgrade price.
    Does anyone else have suggestions for a TeachText REPLACEMENT that
can handle files bigger than 32K and wrap text automatically?

If you are seeking a shareware product I am of no help but I am interested in
your findings....

    But what about write-enabled files?  Allow AutoDoubler 2.0 to
compress a QuickTime movie.  Do NOT lock it after the compression.  Now,
with AutoDoubler running, double click on the movie, making sure that
MoviePlayer is on the hard drive.  If the movie is huge, say 5 meg, you
will wait a long time for it to be decompressed.  After viewing the moving
and quitting it, you will wait again for the file to be compressed.
    Solution?  LOCK the AutoDoubled movie.  Even the 5 meg movie will
not consume any time loading up or quitting if the file is locked.
    The following paragraphs are some rabbit-chasing:
    Why compress a QuickTime file since compression has already
occured from QuickTime's own methods?  AutoDoubler can compress the movie
even more especially if the QuickTime movie is an older one.  But all
QuickTime movies benefit from AutoDoubler, and no extra time is consumed
in loading and de-loading if the movie is locked.  According to
DiskDoubler's "SAVINGS" option, the following are the results of
AutoDoubler's compression as captured by the TEXT CAPTURE F-KEY (locate it
via ARCHIE):

1984 Apple Macintosh Movie (locked)
Kind: document  ('MooV', 'TVOD')
Compressed Size: 4118332 bytes, 4024K on disk
Expanded Size: 4466105 bytes, 4364K on disk
Savings: 7%, 340K saved on disk
Method: AutoDoubler Smaller

    Now 7% savings doesn't sound like much until you look at the size
of this monster and look at the savings, 340k.  And running the movie
reveals NO PENALTY of time.  Indeed, I think it boots up about one second
faster than it if it would without being AutoDoubled compressed, although
I'm on a LCIII, if that makes any difference compared to my older LC.
    Observe this movie, the infamous Industrial Revelation of two
years ago:

Industrial Revelation (locked)
Kind: document ('MooV', 'TVOD')
Compressed Size: 2816056 bytes, 2752K on disk
Expanded Size: 3702916 bytes, 3620K on disk
Savings: 23%, 868K saved on disk
Method: AutoDoubler Smaller

    That is 868k saved!  At one time, it seemed to take forever for
this file to load into MoviePlayer or any other viewer.  After I locked
the AutoDoubled Compressed movie, the penalty disappeared and the file
seems to load in quicker than it does un-AutoDoubled.
    So, in summary, without the user exercising some control, such as
locking files that are write-enabled, then a time performance hit is going
to occur.  Secondly, QuickTime movies are write-enabled so should be
locked.  And, in spite of the movies being already compressed by the very
nature of QuickTime's algorithms, AutoDoubler will compress the movie even
more and if the movie is locked, no time performance hit will occur.  The
user can only benefit due to the amazing savings, such as the 868k saved
above.
    I must say, AutoDoubler is the only product that I have ever had
which I SWEAR BY rather than SWEAR AT.  My only affiliation with Salient
is my profound satisfaction.

So far, I'd like to thank the following people for their help with my DMCS
to MIDI problem:

     Jaime Iturbe, Alexander Rubli, Hoylen Sue, and Doug Hardie.

So far, there is no simple solution to the problem.  Two people mentioned a
program called Deluxe Recorder, by the same people who make DMCS, but it
seems to have been discontinued.  Someone else mentioned a program called
Vision, and someone else suggested patching two machines together and
playing from one into the MIDI record mode of the other.

When I heard about Deluxe Recorder, I decided to call Electronic Arts
myself, and here's what I found out...the person I talked to didn't know
anything about Deluxe Recorder, but he did say that they were working on
version 3.0 of DMCS, which, if it's like the version for the Amiga, *will*
be able to export to a MIDI file.

I guess given the choice between having to buy a whole new piece of
software, an additional Mac and cables, or waiting for an upgrade to a
program I already own, I'll wait a little longer for the upgrade.

By the way...I did find it interesting that the two messages with info on
Deluxe Recorder both came from the same machine in Mexico.

To add to Jeffrey Fritz's comments, I believe you can connect
a 'normal' FAX/modem to any type of phone line if you use an
adapter that plugs into the telephone's handset jack, as opposed
to the wall jack. The analogue signal is treated just as speech

in the case of an ISDN system. One such adapter I have literature
for is the KONEXX KONNECTOR MODEL 112 (Unlimited Systems, 5555
Magnatron Blvd. Suite J, San Diego, CA. Tel [phone]). The
company says  this works up to 9600 baud, "m/f board to digital,
multiline, PBX and hotel telephones...eliminates dedicated lines".
The same company also makes acoustic
couplers for pay phone use etc., lower performance expected. I
have no actual experience with this approach or this company.
But I have seen this product or a similar one in one of the big
mail order ads (MAcconection, MacWarehouse??:?)

Ok... A few things to consider...

1.  Did you use an FTP-by-Mail service (bitftp or ftpmail are the two
biggies)?

2. Did the filename end in something like ".bin"?

Now, If you had an ftpmailer get the files for you and the file ended in
"bin," open one up in a word processor or text editor and see if you get a
series of nice lines of ASCII characters of the same length. If you did,
great. That means you have a chance of saving the file. If you got
something that has a lot of control characters and blanks and what looks
like one or two lines two miles long, you got a MacBinary file, which gets
mutilated in internet mail. But, back to those nice ASCII files. Look in
the first few lines for something that says, "This file must be converted
with BinHex 4.0."  If you have that, the file is in the common internet
exchange format for Mac files.  You can use any release of StuffIt or
StuffIt Expander 3.0.1 to convert it back.
However, if you have a file where all the lines end in "M" or some other
letter, your FTPmailer took it upon itself to uuencode the binary file.
Get a copy of UULite (it's on sumex and should be on the online services)
and use it to un-funk the files. You'll also need the MacBinary or
MacBinary II+ programs to process the files into the 'true' Mac format
(These are also at sumex).

Most FTPmailers allow you to specify a type of encoding to prevent it from
sending you something you can't use. check the help file the gateway
mailed you for more details.

On the other hand, if you're using a machine with true FTP capabilities,
like a unix box, be sure you set the type to the proper setting or else
you're sunk.  "hqx" files should use "type ascii" and "bin" files need
"type binary." Also, if your host's transfer program (kermit, sz, etc)
supports these modes, use them when you modem the files down to your Mac.

I still remember being utterly confounded by the same ordeal for the
better of three months. Hopefully, this will give you a little more
insight into getting ready-to-eat Mac files through the net.

I saw your message in a recent info-mac digest and hereby offer my $.02.
I tried to send this e-mail to both of the addresses in your posting and it
was bounced both times.  I'm obviously doing something wrong but I don't
 know what so I'm reluctantly sending it to you via the digest.

I belong to a Barbershop chorus and maintain our mailing list from which
I generate mailing labels as well as our periodic directory.  I also use it to
generate lists of people having birthdays or anniversaries in any given
month so we can send out birthday and/or anniversary cards.  I have been
using FileMaker II.  I have a record for each member plus a record for
other sets of people to whom we send mailings (society officers, bulletin
editors of other chapters, friends of our chapter, etc.)  I use one field in
the
record layout to specify the set to which that record belongs.  Other fields
give the name of the person, the address, the title (if an officer or bulletin
editor), the name of the member's wife, the birthday of the member and his
wife and their anniversary, the part he sings, etc.  I keep the ZIP code in a
separate field so I can use that to sort the records for mailing purposes
because we are going to start using a mail permit and that requires sorting
mail by ZIP code.

When selecting the set of records for a specific mailing, I can generate a
query which effectively does a logical "or" for the desired collection of
field values for the field I use to specify the sets of people to receive the
particular mailing.  In our case, I only need one "set membership" field
because every record is a member of one and only one set.  However, it
would be quite possible to permit a record to be a member of more than
one set by having a field in each record for each possible set and simply
indicating membership of a given record in a given set by inserting a "Y"
in the appropriate field of that record.

I do my printing on Avery labels on a 3x10 sheet.

Records can be sorted temporarily or permanently based on the value of
any given field(s).

Selected fields from selected records can be exported to another program
in any of four formats: Text file (fields are separated by tabs, records are
separated by return characters), BASIC file (fields are separated by
commas, records are separated by return characters), SYLK file (each
record is a column and each filed in that record is a row in that column -
usually used for input to a spreadsheet program), and Merge file (fields are
separated by commas, records are separated by return characters, the first
record is a header record listing the field names).

I don't know about whether FileMaker II supports network access - I doubt
that it does.  However, I know FileMaker Pro does because several people
in my office have it and have set up databases accessible by others over
the net.

warning that multiple spelling/thesarus modules were loading.

David, the German version of Word has 2 files for each spelling dicitonary
and Thesarus.  One is the Dictionary itself (the data) and the other is the
plugin (what checks the spelling).  You can trash one of the Plugins- just
keep both dictionaries around.  Same with the thesaurus.  Hope this helps-
BTW- is this the case with all non-english Word versions?  I know of
problems with this before.

This plea for help was cross-posted to Mac-L.  I apologise to all who
receive both.

Dear Netfolk,
am having a slight problem with my PB170 running 7.0.1* with NCSA/BYU
Telnet 2.5.  I can't get it to run at all.  I have had a boatload of inits
running recently but have added nothing new in the last few days.  Today
when I started telnet.macTCP version 2.4 something, I got an error saying
"unable to load Resolver" immediately after the splash screen.  There was a
button labelled "Quit" but when pressed the mac just hung, dead, not even
command-option-escape-able.  I turfed the preferences file and tried again.
 Same deal.  Decided to load the newer version NCSA/BYU Telnet 2.5, and now
all I get is the same error message after the splash screen, but with the
minor improvement that if I force quit with a command-option-escape I can
get back to the finder safely.  So I restarted with nothing but apple
extensions (MacTCP obviously, memory, appleshare) all to no avail.  Rebuilt
the desktop; no help.  This is only affecting my mac mind you, everyone
elses around here stil works fine, so it's not our localtalk net's problem.
 My MacTCP control panel looks normal, and work's fine (this is being
written in Eudora), and Xferit and Fetch both work as well).  So over to
you, help................

Subject: Personal Laserwriter NTR versus Select 310

We may soon be having to replace our faltering IINT.  In the UK,
there's currently a special offer on the Personal Laserwriter NTR,
bringing the price right down to 600 pounds + tax.  On the face of
it this seems utterly paradoxical, because the cheapest 'current'
Apple PS printer, the Select 310, is about 850 pounds + tax, and
its specs seem far inferior.  My understanding is:

(1)  The NTR has 3.5 Mb of RAM as a base-level configuration,
the Select 310 only 1.5 Mb.

(2)  The NTR has the good old Laserwriter II set of 35 PS fonts
built-in, whereas the Select 310 has far fewer.  I PRESUME this
means the 310 doesn't have the fonts which Apple seems to have
stopped distributing, ie Avant Garde, Bookman, Zapf Chancery and
Zapf Dingbats.

(3)  According to a sales rep I spoke to, the NTR will be a PS Level 2
printer once Apple release the appropriate driver; I couldn't get
independent confirmation of this claim.  I don't know what the situation
is with the 310 and Level 2 either.

Can other confirm these points or correct me if I'm wrong?  Also, if
you've used either printer extensively and can comment the pros
and cons of each, I'd be much obliged.  Thanks.

If you have used hypercard 2.0 or better, there is a calendar stack on the
home card. This stack works wonderfully on my Mac IIci which has system
7.0. But the stack does not work on my Powerbook which has system 7.1. I
believe that the difficulty rest with the new control panel for the time and
date in 7.1. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions which might correct
the problem.

     Satellite Dish Feed/Stock Quotes
I have a client that has a satellite dish for getting TV signals.  He's very
active in the stock market, and was wondering whether there was any way of
downloading up-to-the-minute stock quotes to a personal computer using his
satellite dish and then loading them into some type of a program to track his
portfolio.  The program could be a spreadsheet or some other specialized
program for this purpose.  He doesn't has a computer yet, but is leaning
towards an IBM machine.

Is this possible?  Could it be done with a Mac or an IBM?  What additional
hardware/software would be necessary?  Do you have recommendations for a
program to track his portfolio?

I know this is asking a lot, but he thought it might be possible, so I'm
trying
to check into the viability.

I feel pretty dumb asking this, but I've used several different programs
to try and make StartupScreens from GIF or PICT files. The images seem to
get generated properly, but when they come up as anticipated during boot,
they look really blotchy. Somehow, I guess, the color tables aren't

I also had most of this happen on my Q700 (i.e., no option to restart) but it
did quit to the Finder which then did NOT rebuild the desktop.

Yup, same thing happened to me.  After running Tech Tool (it took two
tries before it worked on my Quadra 700), a bunch of applications,
several documents and freshly downloaded apps (that same night) went
generic--even after the desktop was reported by the Finder to be
rebuilt.  This *never* happens with Desktop Reset--so it's back as
my primary tool.

Oh well.  Nice try Micromat.

It seems that there is an overwhelming preference for BBEdit Lite.
Alpha also got a few votes. Also mentioned were McSink, Qread,
Tex-Edit, MEdit 1.79, Vantage, Nisus, MiniWriter, and Joliwrite. Many

acLha is on Sumex in the subdirectory compression. It is a compression
programm
 just like compactpro, only for a AMIGA format. You then have to open those

ompressed files from within SoundTrecker. SoundTrecker than asks you whether
yo
u  want to change File type. -> Click "yes" and you can open the files next
tim
e by double-clicking on them (but only if you close them with command-w and
not
 by just quiting Soundtrecker).

So, that's it. These Mod-Files are a lot of fun |||

Does anybody know an extension package to the XLisp system on the Mac that
provides interactive graphic elements like switches, knobs, thermometers etc.
both for data input and data visualization? The XLisp-Stat system provides
statistical functions and according graphical elements like histograms, curve-
fit-tools etc. I need a similar XLisp extension but with graphics for
designing
technical user interfaces.
